Crime Scene Cleanup

Crime Scene Cleanup

Crime scene cleaners and crime scene cleanup companies have been around for about twenty-five years.  Prior to the creation of the first crime scene cleanup business, grieving family members were forced to clean up the remains of deceased loved ones following a crime or traumatic event.   For thousands of years, friends and family members had no choice when it came to cleaning up the blood and bodily fluids of thier loved ones.  Unaware of the potential hazards associated with biohazard cleanup, few if any ever thought to protect themselves with personal protective equipment (PPE).

Not until about 1985 did anyone think about starting a business, which would provide several different types of services that would eliminate the need for loved ones to be involved with the cleanup process.  That person happened to be Dale Cillian, a Phoenix firefighter.  With nothing but a desire to help those in need, Mr. Cillian started what many believe was the first crime scene cleanup company.  Although it's difficult to find information about this first company, it's even more difficult to trace the growth of the industry that followed.  Evidence does show that it wasn't until about 1995 that the industry saw a credible spike in growth.  At or about this time, the Amercian Bio-Recovery Association (ABRA) was created to help regulate an industry that, still today, eludes any federal regulations or guidlines.  A review of ABRA's website did not reveal a date that the association was founded.  It did however contain a sufficient amount of useful information that should be reviewed by anyone looking to start their own crime scene cleanup business.

Many outstanding, caring and compassionate men and women alike can be credited with the advancement of the crime scene cleanup industry.   Individual such as; Michael Tillman of Amdecon, Kent Berg, Don McNulty of Bio Cleaning Services of America, Cory and Tammy Chalmers of Crime Scene Steri-Clean & Ron Gospodarski of Bio-Recovery Corporation have all been instrumental to the industry's overall success.  Working to create training programs, operations manuals, policies, procedures and a code of ethics, these and many others have created an industry they can be proud of.

Today, there are well over three hundred crime scene cleanup companies in operation throughout the United States.  To learn more about this industry, simply use your favorite search engine and enter any of the following keywords: crime scene cleanup, crime scene cleaners, blood cleanup, suicide cleanup, CTS decon, decomposition cleanup or crime scene cleanup training.

In addition to cleaning scenes affected by a crime or traumatic event, most crime scene cleanup companies offer what's known as gross filth cleanup or hoarding cleanup.  Both services deal with the removal and disposal of items from a home or business that is deemed uninhabitable due to a combination of filth and debris, fecal matter, bodily fluids, excessive trash, expired food, odor, boxed items, mold, mildew and other hazardous materials.  In most situations, a crime scene cleanup company is contacted by a family member or close friend who decides that a loved one needs help due to a personality or mental disorder, which prevents them from living within acceptable standards.  To learn more about this type of service, conduct a search for gross filth cleanup or hoarding cleanup.

During the past two years, the crime scene cleanup industry has undergone an incredible growth spurt and has become quite competitive.    Whereas several years ago, one or two companies might have serviced a large geographical area, today five to ten companies can be found servicing a much smaller area.  Crime scene cleanup companies that once serviced several states now find much of that work is given to local companies.
